Free AI Girlfriend Apps: What Each Free Tier Actually Gives You
Most lists of free AI girlfriend apps quote message counts that the companies themselves never published. So we went to each vendor's own site and took only what is written there. The result is shorter than the usual listicle and, in two cases, less flattering than what this page said before — but every number below can be checked at its source. Where a company publishes no figure, we say so instead of filling the gap with a guess.

What a Free Tier Usually Does Not Include
Across the four apps below, free tiers differ far more than the marketing suggests. These are the limits that recur:
- Voice: Usually paid. Kupid AI marks voice messages as unavailable on its free plan, and Promptchan meters voice against the same Gem balance as everything else.
- Memory: Often capped. Kupid AI states its free tier remembers only the last 30 messages; the other three publish no memory figure at all.
- Character creation: Varies, and rarely quantified. None of the four publishes how many characters a free user may create.
- Images: Usually paid, with one real exception: Promptchan is the only app here whose own site says free users can generate AI images.
With that framing, here is what each vendor actually publishes about its own free tier.
Promptchan AI — the only free tier here with image generation
Promptchan is the one app in this comparison whose own pricing page documents a free plan in plain terms. It lists a plan called Free at $0, subtitled as a daily allowance, and its FAQ answers the question directly: you get a daily allowance of free Gems to create AI images and chat with AI companions, with no card required. Gems are the internal currency, and they cover both chat and image generation.
Free includes: a daily allowance of Gems, AI image generation, AI chat, and browsing the community gallery. The vendor does not publish how many Gems the free plan grants per day, and does not publish what an image costs in Gems — so the real output in images per day cannot be derived from public information, and we will not estimate it. Paid plans start at $14.99 per month, stated in US dollars on the vendor's own page.
Candy AI — a 7-day trial rather than a permanent free tier
This entry has changed. An earlier version of this page credited Candy AI with a specific daily allowance of free messages. Candy AI publishes no such figure, and no other free-tier figure, anywhere on its own site — there is not a single currency amount or usage limit on its homepage. That number came from a competitor's comparison table rather than from Candy AI, and it has been removed. What the company does state is that signing up gives you a 7-day trial with full access to what Candy AI has to offer. Note also that an account is required before you can chat at all: anonymous visitors to the chat page are redirected back to the homepage.
Free includes: a 7-day trial the company describes as full access. No message cap, image cap or credit allowance is published — and neither is the price you will pay once the trial ends.
Character.ai — free to chat, but not an AI girlfriend app
Character.ai runs a free plan, and its one-way Character Voice feature is stated to be free to all users. It belongs on this list mostly because so many people arrive at this search from it. It also carries a limit that decides the question for this particular use case: the company's position on adult content is explicit and permanent. In its own words, pornographic content is against its terms of service and will not be supported at any point in the future, and asking for NSFW filters to be removed can result in a ban.
Free includes: a free plan whose exact contents the company does not lay out publicly — we read the plan comparison twice and could not reliably attribute features to the free column, so we make no claim about it. Paid c.ai+ is listed at $9.99 per month or $94.99 per year. If you specifically want romantic or adult roleplay, this is the wrong platform, and no upgrade changes that.
Kupid AI — 15 free messages, and no monthly plan at all
This entry has changed too. An earlier version of this page called Kupid AI the most generous free tier we had found. Its own plan grid says otherwise, and we take the plan grid over our previous wording: the free column allows 15 messages, with photos, videos and voice messages all marked unavailable, and memory limited to the last 30 messages. That is the tightest published free allowance in this comparison, and the easiest to use up in a single sitting.
The paid side is unusual enough to be worth knowing before you start. There is no monthly plan at all — only weekly, yearly and lifetime options. The plan figures in the site's own data carry no currency field, and the same amounts appear elsewhere on the site denominated in dollars, so we will not print them as prices. One more thing worth knowing: the Easter Discount 75% Off banner is a permanent fixture rather than a real sale, so there is nothing to hurry for.
Free includes: 15 messages, memory of the last 30 messages, and no photos, videos or voice messages.
Two stronger free tiers that are not in the comparison above
If a genuinely generous free tier is the whole point, the two best-documented ones we have checked are not in the list above, because this page predates our verification of them. Both are worth knowing about:
- GoLove AI publishes the most detailed free tier of any app we checked. Its own comparison table lists unlimited daily messages, permanent memory, voice messages included and 350+ characters, and its FAQ states that text chat, memory, voice messages and standard photos are all free. - Janitor AI gives free users unlimited chats with a context limit of around 9k tokens, and its help centre answers the question of whether the free option will ever disappear with a flat no. A note on how this page is built: we publish a figure only when the company itself publishes it, which is why several entries read no figure published rather than a confident number. Three apps that appeared in an earlier version — CrushOn AI, Anima and Replika — have been removed because nothing about their free tiers could be verified from their own sites. CrushOn's pages are entirely closed to automated checks; Anima's only free-tier statement sits in a dated blog post that contradicts itself on price; and Replika describes its free tier solely in its terms of service, as limited access, with no figures anywhere.
